DIRECT RV PURCHASES

Selling an RV in Detroit Starts With Its Current Location

A Detroit RV owner might be ready to sell even when the vehicle is not ready to travel. A motorhome may still be parked on residential property. A fifth wheel may be stored behind a gate. A travel trailer may be waiting at a repair facility.

These circumstances do not necessarily prevent an inquiry, but they explain why an RV’s location matters along with its year, condition and ownership documents.

RVBuyerUSA considers direct RV purchase inquiries in Detroit and nationwide. The company has been buying RVs since 2008, primarily from private owners. Dealership inquiries are welcome.

Instead of first creating a public sales listing, you can submit the vehicle for an individual purchase review. If an offer becomes available, you decide whether to accept. No RV is automatically approved.

Start With the Vehicle

Identify the RV, describe what works, and disclose problems that could affect a purchase. Its present condition is more useful than an unsupported claim that it only needs minor work.

Identify the Place Where It Sits

Provide the actual parking ZIP code and explain whether the vehicle is on private property, at a commercial storage facility, at a repair shop or somewhere else. Details about access and permission can become important if a transaction moves forward.

Consider the Terms Before Making Changes

There is no need to reposition an RV solely to ask whether it can be considered for purchase. Vehicle movement, title requirements and payment arrangements should be clarified before any agreed handoff.

WHAT HELPS WITH AN EVALUATION

What to Share About Your Detroit RV

An individual review begins with accurate information. You can provide the details you know and identify anything that has not been checked.

The following information helps describe the RV and the conditions affecting a potential transaction.

Vehicle Identity and Dimensions

Include the year, manufacturer, model and RV type. If possible, add its approximate length, height, floor plan and slide-out configuration. Dimensions are especially helpful when an RV has a narrow route out of a residential property or limited room to maneuver at a storage location.

Motorhome Operation

For Class A, Class B and Class C motorhomes, give the mileage if known and explain whether the engine starts and the vehicle moves. Mention known issues with the transmission, brakes, steering, tires or other systems. Starting an engine does not establish that a motorhome can safely be driven.

Towable RV Equipment

For a travel trailer, identify its coupler, tires, wheels, axles and brakes. For a fifth wheel, include the kingpin, landing gear and room available for a towing vehicle to connect. If equipment is damaged or inaccessible, describe the problem without attempting unsafe movement.

Roof, Interior and Previous Repairs

State whether there are known leaks, soft flooring, damaged sidewalls, slide-out problems, plumbing issues or appliances that do not operate. Explain repairs already completed separately from defects that remain unresolved. If a system has not been checked recently, describe it as untested.

Title and Financing Status

Confirm whether you have the ownership document and whether the RV is titled in your name. Mention any additional owners or an outstanding lender interest. Michigan’s requirements differ for some motorhomes, trailer coaches and pickup campers. You can explain the issue initially without sending confidential title or loan records.

Parking Location and Release Access

Give the ZIP code where the RV is physically located, even if your mailing address is elsewhere. Mention a rear-yard location, garage, alley, gate, managed lot or repair facility. Note any third-party authorization or outstanding charges that might prevent the RV from being released.

Photographs may be requested later if they would help clarify damage, equipment or access. Use an approved method for sharing them. For a more detailed discussion of vehicle evaluation factors, visit Value My RV.

RV TYPES

Motorhomes, Travel Trailers and Other RVs Considered

Different recreational vehicles require different condition information. RVBuyerUSA considers the following categories individually, without guaranteeing that any particular vehicle will qualify.

Class A Motorhomes

For a Class A coach, describe its chassis and powertrain, mileage, generator, leveling equipment and slide-outs. The vehicle’s overall height, length and ability to maneuver may be particularly relevant when it is parked close to buildings or other vehicles.

Class B Motorhomes and Camper Vans

For a camper van, identify the van platform and any conversion or modifications. Report drivetrain condition and the state of electrical, plumbing and installed camping equipment. If the conversion includes custom equipment, describe what is installed rather than assuming it matches a standard factory configuration.

Class C Motorhomes

A Class C motorhome has a cab-based chassis and an attached living compartment. Include engine and mileage information along with any known concerns involving the roof, cab-over structure, seals, flooring and interior systems.

Travel Trailers

Travel trailers rely on their frame, coupler and running gear for movement. Provide the approximate length and condition of tires, axles, brakes, roof and interior. If the trailer has not been towed recently, identify its last known movement rather than assuming it is ready for the road.

Fifth Wheels

A fifth wheel needs a suitable connection and room to position the towing vehicle. Landing gear operation, kingpin condition, frame integrity, tire condition and access around the front of the unit can all be relevant. Mention any restricted turning space.

Toy Haulers

Describe the RV’s motorized or towable configuration and its living-space condition. Also identify the cargo ramp, hinges, garage flooring, tie-down equipment and any damage involving the cargo area.

Truck Campers and Other Configurations

Truck campers and specialty recreational vehicles may also be submitted. Explain whether a truck camper is attached to a vehicle or stored separately and how it can be safely moved.

Michigan has specific title requirements for pickup campers, so describe the ownership documents available. Every RV is evaluated individually. Listing a vehicle category does not constitute a purchase commitment.

CONDITION AND MOBILITY

What If Your Detroit RV Has Damage or Cannot Move Normally?

An RV’s mechanical condition and its ability to be transported are related, but they are not the same question.

RVBuyerUSA may consider motorhomes and towable RVs with mechanical problems, water damage, structural concerns or non-running conditions. The type and extent of each problem affect the review.

A Motorhome That Starts and Drives

Tell us when the vehicle was last used and whether any known issues affect operation. A recent drive can provide useful context, but it does not replace an assessment of tires, brakes, steering and other safety-related components.

A Motorhome That Starts but Is Not Roadworthy

Some motorhomes start normally despite having defective brakes, unsafe tires, steering issues or other conditions that make driving inappropriate. Report the known symptoms. Do not attempt a road test solely for an RV purchase inquiry.

A Motorhome That Does Not Start

If the engine will not start, describe the last known operating date and any previous diagnosis. Also explain what you know about the wheels, steering and brakes. A vehicle with an engine problem can present different transportation needs from one with locked wheels or major suspension damage.

A Trailer That Cannot Be Towed Normally

Tire failures, damaged axles, missing wheels, bent frames and defective landing gear can affect how a travel trailer or fifth wheel might be moved. These problems should be disclosed before transportation is discussed. Do not connect a towing vehicle to a trailer that may be unsafe.

An RV With Roof or Moisture Problems

Report confirmed leaks, stained ceilings, damaged seams, soft flooring, delamination and previous water repairs. If the full extent is unknown, state which areas appear affected and what has not been inspected.

An RV Stored for an Extended Period

An RV that has remained unused through one or more Michigan winters may have batteries, plumbing or mechanical systems that have not been operated recently. Storage does not automatically indicate damage. Report whether the vehicle was winterized and which systems have actually been tested since storage.

An inquiry can begin with the RV in its present condition. Major repairs are not a prerequisite to submitting the vehicle for consideration.

Free towing is included only with an agreed purchase. It is not a separate, guaranteed removal service. Transportation must be evaluated in connection with the individual vehicle and agreement.

DETROIT PARKING AND ACCESS

Detroit RV Parking and Storage: What Matters Before a Sale

Detroit’s municipal parking and zoning rules can matter when an RV is being prepared for a possible sale, especially if an owner is thinking about moving it from storage onto a public street.

There are two distinct legal questions: what is allowed on the street, and what is allowed on the property where the RV is kept. There is also a separate physical question: whether the vehicle can safely leave that location.

1. Parking on a Detroit Residential Street

Detroit City Code Section 46-4-19 restricts specified vehicles, including motorhomes, pickup campers, trailers, trailer coaches and recreational equipment, on residential streets and service drives.

The section contains a narrow exception for motorhomes, pickup campers and coupled trailer coaches. These vehicles may be parked on a residential street for up to 24 hours while loading or unloading for trip preparation or completion.

That is not a general permission for an owner to leave an RV on the street while waiting for a buyer, arranging a sale or planning an unrelated collection. The ordinance also contains separate commercial-street provisions and exceptions for certain activities.

Review Detroit City Code, Section 46-4-19 before relying on a particular parking arrangement. A prospective RV sale does not suspend municipal parking requirements.

2. Keeping an RV on Residential Property

Detroit Zoning Code Section 50-14-283 addresses the parking of specified vehicles on residentially zoned lots, including land zoned R1 through R6 and residential PD. It contains several distinct provisions: a restriction concerning trailers longer than eight feet and semi-trailers; current license plates or registration stickers for outdoor recreational equipment where applicable; recreational vehicle storage in garages or rear yards; a temporary driveway loading or unloading period not exceeding 24 hours; and at least three feet of separation from side and rear lot lines for recreational vehicles and equipment.

Section 50-14-284 adds requirements for R1 and R2 zoning lots. Among them, no more than one recreational vehicle may be parked outdoors, and it must be in the rear yard.

The trailer restriction and recreational vehicle storage provisions should not be interpreted independently without confirming the relevant legal classification. For example, an owner of a travel trailer longer than eight feet should not assume that a rear-yard location automatically makes its storage lawful under every applicable provision.

Check Detroit Zoning Code, Sections 50-14-283 and 50-14-284. The City Clerk ordinance information also explains how to find adopted ordinances not yet incorporated into the published code.

Property-specific questions should be confirmed with the City of Detroit. A purchase inquiry does not determine whether an existing storage arrangement complies with zoning.

3. Driveways, Alleys and the Route to the Street

A vehicle can be accessible from the owner’s property without being ready for immediate transportation. If the RV is in a rear yard, identify whether access is through a paved driveway, an alley or another authorized route. A large fifth wheel may require space for both the RV and the towing vehicle to turn. A motorhome may have limited clearance under trees, wires or building overhangs.

Detroit’s Department of Public Works explains that residential lawn and other unpaved-area parking is restricted, and that driveway approaches and curb cuts are regulated. A permit is required for work involving construction or removal of a driveway approach curb cut.

Do not alter a curb, cross an unapproved parking area or modify the public right of way merely to create an RV exit route. See Detroit DPW Driveway Approaches and Curb Cuts. If the route is narrow or obstructed, describe the restriction instead of trying to move the RV first.

4. Storage Facilities, Repair Shops and Managed Properties

An RV at a commercial storage facility may have access hours, security procedures or release requirements. A vehicle at a repair shop may also have an outstanding invoice, a pending repair or a property-release procedure.

Before completing an agreed transaction, establish who has authority to release the RV and whether charges or access conditions remain unresolved. RVBuyerUSA’s potential interest in a vehicle does not automatically override the rights or requirements of a storage operator, repair business or property owner.

5. A Practical Detroit Location Checklist

RV on a Residential Street

Confirm which city governs the location and review the applicable parking restrictions. Do not assume a possible sale permits continued street storage.

RV in a Driveway or Rear Yard

Identify its vehicle classification, zoning context and route out. Describe gates, narrow passages and any movement limitations.

RV at a Storage Facility

Confirm who can authorize entry and release, and report outstanding charges or scheduling restrictions.

RV at a Repair Shop

Explain the repair status and whether the facility can release the vehicle if a purchase is agreed.

RV That Cannot Move Normally

Report why it cannot move normally. Do not reposition it unsafely or assume that a towing arrangement is already approved.

The purpose of these details is to make the inquiry more accurate. They do not guarantee an offer, collection or exemption from local requirements.

FIVE PRACTICAL STEPS

How a Potential Detroit RV Purchase Works

Each step represents a separate decision. Sending a form does not create an offer, and discussing an offer does not automatically complete a sale.

Step 1. Submit the Initial Information

Share your contact details, RV year, make, model and current ZIP code. Add known mechanical problems, ownership questions or important access restrictions. Your inquiry is free.

Step 2. Have the RV Considered Individually

RVBuyerUSA reviews the available information to determine whether a potential direct purchase may be appropriate. The review may identify additional questions. Not every submitted vehicle receives an offer.

Step 3. Clarify the Details That Matter

Additional photographs, equipment information, title details or transportation questions may be needed. Where appropriate, a further condition review or inspection may be necessary. There is no automatic approval simply because initial information was submitted.

Step 4. Consider Any Proposed Offer

If RVBuyerUSA makes an offer, review the price, conditions, payment arrangements and any remaining requirements. You can request clarification or decline. A proposed offer is different from an accepted purchase agreement.

Step 5. Complete an Agreed Sale

If both parties agree to proceed, they must confirm the applicable ownership documents, lien matters, payment arrangements and conditions for releasing the RV. Free towing is included with an agreed purchase. The particular transportation arrangements must still be confirmed.

No fixed response, payment or collection deadline is guaranteed. For more details, see Our RV Buying Process.

MICHIGAN OWNERSHIP

Michigan RV Ownership Questions for Detroit Sellers

Michigan’s title rules apply statewide. Detroit’s municipal parking rules do not replace those ownership requirements.

You do not need to complete a title transfer before making an inquiry, but knowing the current ownership status can help avoid problems if an offer becomes available.

Check the Title and Named Owners

For a Michigan-titled motorhome, confirm that the title correctly identifies the RV and recorded owner or owners. An ordinary transfer requires appropriate title assignment, seller and buyer information, signatures and an accurate odometer disclosure where applicable. Exceptions to mileage disclosure can depend on vehicle characteristics and model year.

If more than one owner appears on the title, confirm the required signatures before proceeding. See Michigan SOS buying and selling guidance.

Understand Michigan Trailer-Coach Classification

Michigan classifies travel trailers, fifth wheels and pop-up campers as trailer coaches. All trailer coaches must be titled and registered with a permanent trailer plate. Pickup campers must also be titled.

The ordinary trailer rule involving a 2,500-pound title threshold does not remove the requirement to title a trailer coach. Permanent trailer plates are not transferable to another owner. For classification and plate information, consult Michigan SOS recreational vehicle guidance.

Identify Missing Titles and Outstanding Loans

If your title has been lost, check the applicable duplicate-title process. If there is an active lien, the lender’s interest must be addressed. Michigan distinguishes paper titles from electronic titles. An electronic title generally cannot be transferred while its lien remains active.

An RV with a salvage, rebuilt salvage or scrap record may have separate transfer or road-use restrictions. Describe the actual title status accurately. See Michigan SOS title FAQs.

Confirm the Seller’s Handoff Responsibilities

For applicable motor vehicle sales, Michigan generally requires the seller to remove the plate before the buyer takes possession, subject to certain exceptions. Permanent trailer plates have separate nontransferability rules.

The state advises sellers to retain a copy of the assigned title and proof of sale. Michigan generally gives the buyer 15 days to complete a vehicle title transfer. That is a buyer transfer deadline, not a blanket 15-day seller notice deadline.

Confirm transaction requirements before releasing the RV, particularly where more than one owner, an active lien or a nonstandard title record is involved. Read the full RVBuyerUSA Michigan RV selling guide and Michigan SOS title transfer instructions.

SELLING OPTIONS

Four Ways to Sell an RV in Detroit

A direct purchase is one possible route, not automatically the best choice for every owner.

Consider how each selling method fits the RV’s condition, where it is parked, and how much of the transaction you want to manage yourself.

Private RV Listing

You choose an asking price, prepare photographs and advertise the RV to potential buyers. You also manage inquiries, viewings, negotiations and the sale. If the vehicle cannot move easily or must be shown at a managed property, additional arrangements may be needed. A private sale can suit an owner with time to market a usable RV. The advertised price is not a guaranteed final sale amount.

RV Consignment

A consignment provider may advertise and show the RV under an agreement with you. Before signing, ask about commission, storage, insurance, listing duration and what happens if the RV remains unsold. A consignment arrangement may involve moving the RV to another property, depending on the provider’s terms.

Dealer Trade-In

A dealership may offer a trade-in allowance toward the purchase of another motorhome or trailer. Compare the complete replacement transaction, including the new vehicle’s price and other terms. A trade-in allowance is not necessarily equivalent to a separate direct purchase offer.

Direct RV Purchase Evaluation

RVBuyerUSA considers an RV for potential purchase without requiring you to first place a public advertisement. Its vehicle type, condition, ownership record and location may all affect whether an offer is possible. If an offer is made, compare its actual price and conditions with your other selling options. You remain free to decline.

WHERE OWNERS ARE LOCATED

Detroit Neighborhoods and Nearby Metro Communities

A recognizable neighborhood name can help establish general location, but it does not explain everything about an RV’s access.

For a useful evaluation, supply the vehicle’s actual ZIP code and describe its parking arrangements.

Within the City of Detroit

Detroit includes Downtown, Midtown, Corktown, Southwest Detroit, Woodbridge, New Center, Eastern Market, North End, Palmer Woods, Sherwood Forest, University District, Indian Village, East English Village and Jefferson-Chalmers.

An RV may be parked at a residence, in a commercial lot, inside a garage or at a repair facility in any part of the city. No neighborhood alone establishes whether the vehicle is legally stored, safely movable or approved for purchase.

For example, a fifth wheel with an alley access route may require different movement planning from a Class B camper van with open driveway access. The actual circumstances, not the neighborhood label, determine what information is useful.

Other Wayne County Communities

Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Hamtramck, Highland Park, River Rouge, Grosse Pointe Park, Harper Woods, Livonia and Redford Township are separate communities or municipalities within Wayne County.

Owners in those areas may submit RV inquiries, but Detroit’s municipal parking and zoning restrictions should not be assumed to apply to their properties.

Nearby Oakland and Macomb County Communities

Ferndale and Southfield are in Oakland County. Warren is in Macomb County. These communities are within the broader Detroit metropolitan area but are governed by their own local authorities.

If your RV is outside Detroit city limits, use its actual location and check the applicable municipal or township requirements. RVBuyerUSA considers purchase inquiries nationwide, including throughout Michigan. Coverage means the vehicle can be submitted for review, not that collection or purchase is guaranteed.

Visit the Michigan RV buying page or the nationwide RV buying hub for broader geographic information.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Detroit RV Selling Questions

Answers about Detroit parking, Michigan trailer ownership, property access, non-running RVs and individual purchase reviews.

Yes. RVBuyerUSA considers RVs for possible direct purchase based on information provided by the owner. You can begin with the form while the RV remains at its current location. An inquiry does not mean a pickup is approved or scheduled. The request is free and there is no obligation to accept an offer. Private owners are the primary customers, and dealership inquiries are also welcome.

Detroit generally restricts specified motorhomes, pickup campers, trailers and trailer coaches on residential streets and service drives. Section 46-4-19 contains a limited 24-hour exception for certain RVs while loading or unloading for trip preparation or completion. It is not general permission for long-term parking during a sale. Check the Detroit traffic ordinance.

Do not assume it is automatically permitted. Detroit Section 50-14-283 contains a restriction concerning trailers longer than eight feet while also addressing recreational vehicle storage in garages and rear yards. The correct application can depend on vehicle classification and zoning requirements. Confirm your particular situation with the City of Detroit before relying on a rear-yard storage arrangement.

Describe the alley access, any gate, the available turning area and whether the RV can move safely. A motorhome may need enough clearance to leave under its own power or be transported. A fifth wheel needs a suitable towing connection and space to position the towing vehicle. These are review details, not a guarantee that any specific alley or property can accommodate collection.

Yes, it may be submitted. Explain where it is parked and identify any gate restrictions, outstanding charges, repair status or release requirements. The property operator’s authorization and applicable obligations must be resolved before an agreed transaction can include the RV’s release.

A non-running motorhome may be considered individually. Provide the last known operating date, any known diagnosis, and whether the wheels, steering and brakes appear capable of normal movement. Do not attempt an unsafe start, road test or tow. Purchase and transportation feasibility depend on the actual condition and circumstances.

Michigan generally requires trailer coaches, including travel trailers, fifth wheels and pop-up campers, to be titled regardless of the ordinary trailer’s 2,500-pound threshold. Trailer coaches also use permanent trailer plates. Check the Michigan Secretary of State RV guidance and the vehicle’s actual classification.

You can explain either situation when making an inquiry. A completed sale requires applicable ownership documents and proper treatment of any lender interest. Michigan offers duplicate-title procedures. Electronic titles with active liens have additional requirements. Do not assume that a buyer’s interest automatically resolves a missing title or outstanding loan.

Yes. Free towing is included with an agreed RV purchase. This is not a free standalone removal service for RVs that have not been purchased. Any collection must account for the vehicle’s ownership status, physical condition, access and agreed transaction arrangements.

You may submit the vehicle for individual review. Use the actual ZIP code and location of the RV. Hamtramck and Dearborn are separate municipalities in Wayne County, while Southfield is in Oakland County. Detroit’s municipal rules do not automatically apply outside Detroit city limits. The correct local authority depends on where the RV is parked.

An inquiry does not guarantee an offer. If RVBuyerUSA cannot proceed with a purchase, the submission has not transferred ownership or obligated you to sell. You can still consider a private sale, a dealer trade-in, consignment or another suitable option. If an offer is available, you can review and decline it. No fixed response or payment deadline is guaranteed.
