THE RV LOCATION COMES FIRST
Selling an RV in Chicago Starts With Its Current Location
Thinking about selling a motorhome or trailer in Chicago? Before arranging advertisements, showings or transportation, consider where the RV is parked and whether it can leave that location safely and lawfully.
A motorhome on private property raises different access questions from a fifth wheel inside a gated storage lot. An RV occupying a city street may be subject to restrictions that affect how long it can remain there. These details matter before a potential purchase can be completed.
RVBuyerUSA considers direct RV purchase inquiries from private owners nationwide, including Chicago. Dealership inquiries are also welcome. You can explore a possible sale without first advertising the vehicle to individual shoppers.
Where Is the RV Parked?
Whether your RV is in a driveway, on a city street, inside a storage facility or at a repair business, explain its actual location. Include the ZIP code where the vehicle sits rather than only your home or mailing ZIP code.
Can the RV Leave That Location?
Think about its approximate dimensions, whether it can move normally and any obstacles between the parking space and a suitable road. A narrow gate, restricted alley entrance or low overhead structure may affect transportation planning.
Who Can Authorize Access and Release?
If you do not control the storage property, confirm who can provide access and whether there are release requirements or outstanding charges. That information can be useful when considering a possible transaction.
CHICAGO STREET AND STORAGE RULES
Chicago RV Parking Rules and Access Considerations
Chicago’s municipal parking and zoning rules can affect an owner who is storing an RV while preparing to sell it. The regulations depend on the type of vehicle and the particular parking situation.
The following guidance applies to the City of Chicago. Other municipalities in the metropolitan area have their own rules.
Residential Streets: Trailers, Motorhomes and the 22-Foot Threshold
Chicago Municipal Code Section 9-64-170(a) generally restricts the parking of trailers, self-contained motorhomes and recreational vehicles longer than 22 feet on residential streets. The regulation applies at any time, not only overnight, subject to the exceptions specified in the ordinance.
One exception concerns vehicles actually and expeditiously being loaded or unloaded. This is not permission to leave an RV on the street for an extended selling period.
An RV shorter than 22 feet is not automatically exempt. Its vehicle classification and other applicable parking restrictions still matter.
Read the Chicago special vehicle parking ordinance, Section 9-64-170.
Business Streets and Clearance Near Driveways or Alleys
Section 9-64-170(b) also restricts certain vehicle categories on business streets, including trailers and self-contained motorhomes, subject to the ordinance’s exceptions.
Under Section 9-64-170(c), vehicles six feet or taller may not stand or park within 20 feet of a crosswalk, alley, commercial driveway or fire lane.
For a large motorhome or towable RV, these rules may affect whether a proposed stopping or loading location is lawful. The presence of a nearby business or wide street does not itself establish permission to park there.
Review the same official special vehicle parking requirements before making arrangements.
Private Property and Zoning-Required Parking Spaces
Private-property parking should not be confused with public street parking.
Chicago Zoning Ordinance Section 17-10-0501 requires zoning-required off-street parking areas to be used for licensed motor vehicles in operating condition. It also prohibits using those required spaces for long-term storage of vehicles, boats or recreational vehicles, or for displaying goods for sale or lease.
This does not establish a blanket prohibition on all RV parking on privately owned property. Whether a particular location is permissible depends on the applicable zoning, property circumstances and other rules.
If your RV occupies a driveway, side area or parking space that serves a building, confirm the lawful use of that location before making long-term storage or sale arrangements.
Official source: Chicago Zoning Ordinance 17-10-0501.
Winter Overnight Parking and Snow Routes
Chicago has additional restrictions that can affect vehicle staging during winter.
Under Municipal Code Section 9-64-060, designated streets with the required signs prohibit parking from 3 a.m. to 7 a.m. between December 1 and March 31.
A separate rule, Section 9-64-070, restricts parking on signed snow routes when snow on the street exceeds two inches, subject to the ordinance’s limited loading exceptions and applicable snow-removal period.
These seasonal rules are additional to the ordinary RV restrictions. They should not be interpreted as allowing an RV to park where Section 9-64-170 already prohibits it.
Check the signs at the actual location, current conditions and applicable city guidance before arranging any winter movement.
Official sources: Section 9-64-060 and Section 9-64-070.
Viaducts, Bridges and Vehicle Height
A large motorhome or tall fifth wheel may not be able to use the route that looks most convenient on a passenger-car map.
Chicago publishes a dataset of height and weight limits for trucks and large vehicles. The restrictions include structures such as viaducts, overpasses and other overhead facilities.
If there is a known low-clearance structure near your RV, mention it along with the vehicle’s approximate height and the available route out of the property.
The dataset provides a useful reference, but does not replace current posted signs, transport regulations or a route assessment by the person responsible for moving the vehicle.
Official resource: Chicago Height and Weight Limits for Trucks and Large Vehicles.
Storage Facilities, Alley Entrances and Repair Shops
An RV inside a commercial storage yard may need a gate appointment, authorization from the registered owner or clearance of unpaid storage charges before it can be released.
An RV at a repair shop may involve outstanding repair charges or other release requirements. An RV on a managed residential property may require permission from the person responsible for the premises.
Alley or driveway access also deserves attention. Check whether there is enough room for a large motorhome or an appropriate towing vehicle to enter, maneuver and leave without obstructing public property or damaging nearby structures.
Do not move an unsafe vehicle simply to prepare for a purchase inquiry.
What to Check Before a Possible RV Collection
Useful information includes:
- Where the RV is parked and who controls access.
- Whether the location is within Chicago city limits.
- Approximate RV length, width and height.
- Whether the RV starts, rolls, steers and brakes normally.
- Gate openings, driveway access and maneuvering room.
- Known low bridges, overhead obstacles or route restrictions.
- Storage facility access hours and any release requirements.
- Current parking restrictions that could affect lawful temporary positioning.
You can submit this information without first arranging your own towing.
Free towing is included with an agreed RVBuyerUSA purchase. No particular RV pickup, route or transportation arrangement is automatically guaranteed.
DIRECT RV PURCHASES
A Direct Purchase Option for Chicago RV Owners
Selling privately often involves choosing an asking price, taking photographs, managing advertisements, answering inquiries and arranging viewings.
RVBuyerUSA offers another possibility. You can submit your motorhome or towable RV for individual consideration as a direct purchase, rather than asking the company to advertise it to retail shoppers.
RVBuyerUSA has been buying RVs since 2008. Private owners are the primary customers, and dealership inquiries are welcome.
A submitted vehicle is not automatically approved. The company may consider its type, condition, ownership status, location and practical transportation requirements before determining whether a purchase offer is possible.
If an offer is available, you can review the proposed price and conditions before making your decision. You have no obligation to accept.
For a broader explanation, see How RVBuyerUSA Reviews and Purchases RVs.
DETAILS THAT MATTER
Information That Helps With Your Chicago RV Review
A useful inquiry describes the vehicle you actually own, including anything that might affect its condition or ability to be moved.
You can begin with the basic form information and explain additional details during follow-up. You do not need to guess about systems you have not checked.
Identify the RV and Its Dimensions
Provide the model year, manufacturer, model and RV type. If you know the approximate length, height, floor plan or slide-out configuration, include those details.
Dimensions are especially helpful if the RV must pass through a narrow entrance or use a route with posted vehicle restrictions.
Describe Motorhome Operating Condition
For a Class A, B or C motorhome, include mileage if known, fuel type and whether the engine starts.
Explain separately whether the motorhome can be driven safely. Known steering, braking, drivetrain or tire issues should be identified rather than hidden behind a statement that the engine runs.
Describe Trailer and Fifth Wheel Running Gear
For a travel trailer or fifth wheel, the towing connection and running gear matter. Report known issues involving tires, wheels, axles, brakes, the coupler or fifth-wheel hitch.
For a fifth wheel, also mention landing gear condition and whether a suitable tow vehicle can reach the front of the unit.
Explain Roof and Living-Area Condition
Describe known leaks, soft flooring, wall damage, slide-out problems, appliance failures or electrical and plumbing issues.
If a repair was completed, say what was repaired. If a system has not been tested recently, identify it as untested.
Identify Ownership Questions
Indicate whether the title is available and whether a bank or other lender has a recorded interest.
Multiple owners, missing title documents and branded-title designations may require clarification before a sale can be completed. Do not place confidential banking details, identification documents or title images in the initial message field.
Explain the Actual Storage and Access Situation
Tell RVBuyerUSA whether the RV is parked at home, in a paid storage facility, at a repair shop or on another property.
Mention any obstacle that could complicate movement, such as a locked gate, limited turning room or a vehicle that cannot roll safely.
For additional background on vehicle evaluation, read Value My RV.
RV TYPES
Motorhomes, Trailers and Other RVs We Consider
RVBuyerUSA considers multiple types of motorized and towable recreational vehicles. The category helps determine which details are most useful, but every individual RV must still be reviewed.
Class A Motorhomes
A Class A motorhome may require particular attention to its overall dimensions, chassis, drivetrain, tires and equipment. Tell us whether it can be driven and whether its current location provides room for a vehicle of that size to maneuver.
Class B Motorhomes and Camper Vans
For a Class B motorhome or camper van, describe the chassis, mileage, conversion equipment and any unusual modifications. Report problems involving the engine, electrical systems, roof or installed living equipment.
Class C Motorhomes
A Class C combines a driving chassis with a built-in living area. Along with mileage and mechanical condition, mention known damage around the cab-over structure, exterior seams, roof and interior flooring.
Travel Trailers
Travel trailers depend on a tow vehicle and suitable hitch connection. Include the trailer’s approximate length, axle and tire condition, brake status and any difficulty reaching it with a towing vehicle.
Fifth Wheels
Fifth wheels generally require a compatible towing setup and sufficient working space around the front of the unit. Report landing gear, hitch, wheel and axle condition, along with overall height and slide-out operation.
Toy Haulers
Toy haulers may be motorized or towable. Describe the RV’s configuration, cargo ramp, garage flooring, suspension and any known damage involving the loading area.
Truck Campers and Other RV Configurations
Truck campers, specialty campers and other recreational vehicles can also be submitted. Identify whether the camper is mounted on a vehicle or requires separate loading or transportation equipment.
The ability to submit an RV does not mean that every model, age or condition will qualify for purchase.
CONDITION AND MOBILITY
What If Your Chicago RV Is Damaged or Cannot Move?
Mechanical problems, structural damage and long-term storage do not automatically prevent a purchase inquiry. RVBuyerUSA may consider damaged and non-running vehicles individually.
It is important, however, to describe the current condition accurately. A vehicle that cannot start, a vehicle that cannot move safely and a vehicle that cannot be reached are three different situations.
A Motorhome That Starts but Is Not Roadworthy
A motorhome may run while still having problems with the brakes, steering, tires, suspension or cooling system.
Explain the known fault and whether it has been diagnosed. Do not assume the RV can be driven safely simply because the engine starts.
A Motorhome That Will Not Start
State when the motorhome last ran and what is known about the failure. Also explain whether the wheels turn freely and whether the steering and braking systems appear functional.
A vehicle with a dead battery may present a different situation from one with missing wheels or severe structural damage. A purchase review must consider the actual problem.
A Trailer With Damaged Towing Components
A travel trailer may have a usable living area but defective wheel bearings, bent axles, damaged tires or an unsafe hitch connection.
For a fifth wheel, malfunctioning landing gear or inadequate front clearance may also affect the practical ability to move the unit. Report these concerns without attempting unsafe towing or repair.
Water Damage and Long-Term Storage
An RV may have roof leaks, moisture damage, deteriorated flooring or systems that have not been operated for years.
If the vehicle was stored through Chicago winters, report any known freeze-related damage or winterization problems. Do not assume damage occurred merely because the RV was stored in a cold climate.
You can request consideration of the RV in its present condition. No purchase or transportation approval is guaranteed.
FIVE PRACTICAL STEPS
Five Steps From RV Inquiry to a Possible Sale
A direct purchase inquiry begins a review. It is not a sale agreement, a guaranteed appraisal or an authorization to remove the vehicle.
1. Submit the Initial RV Information
Provide your contact details, RV year, make, model and actual parking ZIP code. Add known condition, title and access information where possible.
Submitting the request is free.
2. Individual Purchase Review
RVBuyerUSA considers the information to determine whether a direct purchase might be possible.
Not every submitted RV receives an offer. No automatic approval or fixed review deadline is promised.
3. Clarify Important Details
Additional information may be needed about vehicle condition, photographs, ownership records or the parking location.
An inspection may also be appropriate in some circumstances. Clarifying these matters does not obligate either party to complete a sale.
4. Consider Any Proposed Offer
If a purchase offer is available, review the price and conditions carefully.
Ask about payment arrangements, remaining documentation requirements and the proposed vehicle handoff. You can decline an offer without obligation.
5. Complete an Agreed Purchase
When both parties agree to proceed, confirm ownership documents, any lien arrangements, payment details and collection requirements.
Free towing is included with the agreed RV purchase. A completed inquiry alone does not provide a standalone towing or removal service.

ILLINOIS OWNERSHIP BASICS
Illinois Paperwork Before a Chicago RV Changes Hands
A Chicago seller should confirm the RV’s ownership documents before completing a transaction. The Illinois Secretary of State administers vehicle title and registration requirements.
You do not need to transfer ownership simply to request a purchase review. The following points help identify questions that may need to be resolved before a sale.
Title, Named Owners and Outstanding Loans
For an Illinois-titled RV, check the Certificate of Title for the correct vehicle identification number, ownership names and any recorded lender.
The seller generally must complete the applicable title assignment when the sale takes place. If more than one person owns the RV, make sure the appropriate owners participate in the transfer.
If a title has been lost, consult the state’s duplicate-title procedure. If a lender holds a lien, confirm the necessary payoff and release arrangements.
An outstanding loan does not automatically prevent you from requesting an evaluation.
Official resources: Illinois Title and Registration FAQ and Duplicate Titles.
Motorhomes and Towable RVs Have Different Disclosure Questions
A motorhome is self-propelled, while a travel trailer or fifth wheel is not. Illinois odometer disclosure requirements include an exemption for vehicles that are not self-propelled.
Certain motorhomes may also qualify for exemptions based on model year, weight rating or other applicable criteria. Do not assume every motorhome or trailer requires identical mileage documentation.
For the details, see Illinois Vehicle Code Section 3-112.1.
Remove Plates and Submit the Seller’s Report of Sale
The Illinois Secretary of State advises sellers to remove their license plates before delivering a sold vehicle. Illinois license plates generally remain associated with the registered owner rather than transferring to a new owner with the vehicle.
The state also provides Seller’s Report of Sale, Form VSD 703. Its instructions direct sellers to complete and mail the report immediately after selling or releasing an interest in a vehicle titled or registered in Illinois.
Submitting VSD 703 does not substitute for the required title assignment.
Official sources: Illinois Seller’s Report of Sale, VSD 703 and Illinois License Plate Transfer Guidance.
Chicago-Area Motorhome Emissions Questions
Illinois operates a vehicle emissions inspection program in designated areas, including the Chicago region. Whether a particular motorhome is subject to testing depends on the vehicle’s characteristics, registration circumstances and applicable exemptions.
An emissions test is not automatically required merely to submit an RVBuyerUSA inquiry. If your motorhome is subject to testing, verify the applicable compliance requirements before completing the relevant registration or transaction steps.

COMPARE YOUR SELLING OPTIONS
Compare Ways to Sell an RV Around Chicago
Different selling methods involve different responsibilities. Compare what each option requires, what the RV is worth to an actual buyer and the conditions attached to a proposed transaction.
Sell Through a Private Listing
You choose an asking price, advertise the RV and communicate with prospective purchasers.
This can work well for an owner who has time to manage inquiries and showings. A successful private sale may produce a different financial result from a direct purchase, but the asking price is not a guaranteed sale price.
Use an RV Consignment Service
A consignment business may market and show the RV under an agreed arrangement.
Before signing, review commissions, storage costs, contract duration, insurance responsibilities and any required repairs. Confirm what happens if the RV remains unsold.
Discuss a Dealer Trade-In
A trade-in may be useful if you plan to acquire another recreational vehicle.
Compare the entire replacement purchase agreement rather than the trade-in allowance alone. The transaction may include financing terms, fees or other considerations that differ from an outright sale.
Request a Direct RV Purchase Review
A direct buyer considers purchasing the RV rather than listing it for other shoppers.
RVBuyerUSA reviews vehicles individually. Your inquiry is free, you can decline any offer, and free towing is included with an agreed purchase.
A direct offer may differ from a private listing price or consignment target. No particular offer amount or purchase is guaranteed.
You can review broader valuation considerations at Value My RV.
CHICAGO AND NEARBY AREAS
Chicago Neighborhoods and Nearby Communities
RVBuyerUSA considers inquiries from owners throughout Chicago and the surrounding region. What matters for an individual evaluation is where the RV actually sits, which local rules apply and whether the vehicle can be accessed.
Within the City of Chicago
Chicago owners in Jefferson Park, Portage Park, Logan Square, Bridgeport, Garfield Ridge, Beverly, South Shore and Rogers Park can submit RVs for individual consideration.
For example, an owner may need to describe a narrow residential driveway, an alley entrance or a vehicle kept at a commercial storage business. Those are possible access situations, not claims that all properties in a particular neighborhood share the same conditions.
Use the RV’s actual ZIP code and describe the property instead of relying on the neighborhood name alone.
Nearby Municipalities Have Their Own Rules
Owners in Evanston, Skokie, Des Plaines, Oak Park, Cicero and Berwyn may also inquire about an RV purchase.
These are separate municipalities. Chicago’s municipal parking ordinances should not be treated as governing every property or street in those communities.
When an RV is outside Chicago, provide the correct municipality and any relevant parking, access or storage restrictions.
Coverage Beyond the City
RVBuyerUSA considers purchase inquiries throughout Illinois and nationwide. There is no requirement that the RV be stored within Chicago city limits to submit a request.
The company does not represent that it maintains an office, storage yard or dedicated pickup team in any particular Chicago neighborhood.
For areas outside Chicago, see the Illinois RV buying page or the nationwide RV buying directory.
